Kosaka Shiden (1872-1917) was a distinguished Japanese Nanga painter born in Ozawa Village, now Ina City. Coming from a family with a tradition in the arts and education, Shiden studied under various masters, including Komuro Kutsuzan and Kodama Katei. He moved to Tokyo at age 18, sharing a residence with his cousin and fellow artist, Nakamura Fusetto. Shiden quickly gained recognition for his Nanga painting, receiving several high awards and government purchases of his work. At 27, he was given the artist name "Shiden," linking him to a lineage of renowned Nanga painters. He later founded the Sekisui-sanbo painting school in Tokyo, continuing the tradition of teaching and painting until his death at age 45 in 1917. Shiden's life and career were marked by a dedication to Nanga painting and a desire to emulate his mentor's focus on art and education rather than seeking fame in the capital.
